A TRIBUTE TO RONALD HARRIS
In 1988 the Society of Friends of Silton was formed to raise funds for the preservation, repair and maintenance of both St Nicholas Church, a Grade 1 Listed building, and the Village Hall.   Clearly, to look after these two buildings properly was going to cost a great deal of money and involve much fund raising.   The Friends had been set up thanks to a legacy bequeathed to the Village which had already been instrumental in paying for the costly repair and maintenance of the church bells and the organ but more funds were urgently needed.   In 1996 the quarry at Manor Farm had been exhausted and the resulting hole had been registered as a landfill site for which Landfill Tax was payable by those who used it.  Ronald immediately realised that as a charity SOFOS could be eligible to claim some of this tax, up to 19%, from the company using the site.   As a result, St Nicholas Church, the Village Hall and surrounding land were registered as an environmental body and over the next 4-5 years SOFOS was given £19,000 by Ronald from Dorset Stone Ltd.  This sum contributed hugely towards the repair and maintenance of heating and lighting in the church, re-roofing the Village Hall and re-plastering part of the church ceiling.   Ronald was a major contributor towards both SOFOS and the Village Hall funds for many years which was, of course, greatly appreciated.
